KS1

At Key Stage (KS1), we focus on building a strong foundation in core subjects while fostering creativity, curiosity, and independence. Our engaging curriculum supports the development of key knowledge and skills across a variety of subjects, helping children grow in confidence and understanding as they progress through Year 1 (Bumble Bees) and Year 2 (Flower Bees).

English

In KS1, children will develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. They will:

  • Phonics: Learn to decode words through phonics, enabling them to read fluently and with comprehension.
  • Reading: Explore a wide range of stories, poems, and non-fiction texts, developing a love of reading and improving their understanding of language.
  • Writing: Begin writing sentences, progressing to longer pieces that include descriptions, stories, and non-fiction writing. They will learn about grammar, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, punctuation, and sentence structure.
  • Spelling and Handwriting: Practice spelling common words and using correct letter formation to write legibly.

Maths

Maths in KS1 focuses on developing a strong understanding of number and basic operations. Key areas include:

  • Place Value: Understanding the value of each digit in numbers up to 100, and comparing and ordering numbers.
  • Addition and Subtraction: Developing strategies to add and subtract numbers up to 20 and beyond, including two-digit numbers.
  • Multiplication and Division: Learning to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s, and exploring early multiplication and division concepts.
  • Shape and Measures: Recognising and describing 2D and 3D shapes, and using non-standard and standard units to measure length, weight, and time.

Science

In Science, KS1 students will explore the world around them through hands-on activities and investigations. Topics include:

  • Plants: Identifying and understanding the needs of plants for growth.
  • Animals, including Humans: Learning about different animals, their habitats, and their basic needs, alongside understanding human development and survival.
  • Seasonal Changes: Observing and discussing changes across the four seasons.
  • Everyday Materials: Exploring the properties and uses of materials around us.

Geography

Geography in KS1 focuses on exploring the world and understanding our place within it. Children will:

  • Learn about the four countries of the UK, their capital cities, and significant landmarks.
  • Identify and describe natural and man-made features of landscapes.
  • Begin to explore maps and simple geography skills to locate places and features.

History

In History, children will develop an awareness of the past and how it shapes the present. They will:

  • Learn about significant historical events and people.
  • Explore changes over time, such as how homes, toys, and schools have evolved.
  • Develop a sense of chronology, understanding timelines and historical sequences.

Art & Design

KS1 students will explore creativity through various mediums. They will:

  • Develop skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture.
  • Experiment with line, shape, colour, and texture.
  • Study the work of famous artists and use their techniques as inspiration.

Physical Education (PE)

In PE, children will build on their physical development through fun and engaging activities. They will:

  • Develop fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching.
  • Engage in simple team games to enhance coordination and teamwork.
  • Learn to appreciate the importance of health and fitness.

Religious Education (RE)

In RE, children will begin to understand different religions and beliefs. They will:

  • Learn about key aspects of Christianity, Islam, and other world religions.
  • Explore the meaning of belonging, community, and celebrations.
  • Reflect on how these beliefs relate to their own lives and experiences.

Computing

Computing in KS1 introduces children to the world of technology. They will:

  • Learn about information technology and its uses in daily life.
  • Develop basic digital literacy, understanding how to use devices safely.
  • Begin to explore coding and programming through age-appropriate activities.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

PSHE helps children understand their emotions, responsibilities, and how to stay safe and healthy. They will:

  • Explore topics like self-awareness, relationships, and belonging.
  • Learn about healthy lifestyles, including food choices and exercise.
  • Discuss the importance of friendship, kindness, and respect for others.
